Rook rules at a glance

Rook is a four-player partnership trick-taking game played with a Rook deck. Partners sit opposite each other, and the goal is to score more points than the other partnership by capturing counter cards in tricks.

Each hand starts with a bidding round. The high bidder chooses the trump color, picks up the nest, and exchanges cards before leading the first trick. The highest card of the color led wins the trick, unless a trump is played. Counter cards taken in tricks become points for the partnership. Family Rook uses the full 57-card deck: thirteen cards to each player and five in the nest. The Rook Bird is the highest trump, and the 1 is high in every color. Counters are 1s (15), 5s (5), 10s and 14s (10 each), and the Rook Bird (20). Bids run from 70 to 180 in steps of five, and the first partnership to 300 points wins.

  • Four players in two partnerships, sitting opposite each other.
  • Bid for the right to choose trump and take the nest.
  • Follow the color led when you can; otherwise play any card.
  • Counter cards score for the partnership that captures them.
  • Family Rook: all 57 cards, 13 each, a 5-card nest, bids from 70 to 180, and a race to 300.
  • Rules and scoring details vary by variant, so choose your rule set when creating the game.
